Timeless.

Recently I came across the ‘Timeless Watch” by Rogan.

Made in NYC, the wrist candy repurposes old watch pieces, making each one both unique and a chic example of upcycling.

But the best part of this accessory, its “timeless” empty face, not only neatly dismisses the modern anxieties of analogue-vs.-digital and how to convey the appropriate importance without looking too flashy, but in the process also cleverly comments on the whole convention of keeping time at all.

This watch reminded me of a conversation I had with my cousin not too long ago. He told me he didnt need watches because he always used his phone as a clock instead. This watch practically plays on that concept. Watches these days seem to be more of a fashion accessory as opposed to a means of keeping time.

I liked the concept so much, I ‘re-purposed’ an old leather strapped watch from an OP shop and made my own Timesless watch.

On a side note, I found a brilliant little comic to illustrate my point:

There, I Fixed It.

As I always say: “If you can’t make it work, make what can work, work.”

That’s deep. You might want to write that down, it could change your life.

Similarity: Sometimes, it’s just best not done.

Yes it’s been awhile since I last posted anything. But here’s a little something to kick things off again.

AFFORDANCE:

In Design, the simplified version of the term refers to the product’s aesthetic affecting the way the user perceives its use.

So last year I was sitting at a restaurant with the family admiring a fairly cool water jug design. It holds a fair amount of water, has a nice shape, overall quite a pleasing design.

Well that was until I walked past one of these a couple of days ago:

Pictured above is a chewing gum disposal unit. Pull one of these off a bin, place it on a restaurant table with water in it and I wouldn’t have known the difference.

Sometimes, when designing a product, I think it best to take a massive step back, pull yourself out of the equation and just honestly ask yourself: “What does this look like?”

Better yet, ask someone non-design related, their answer just might surprise you.

Late Again?

Subtly drop the hint with this nifty wall clock. The perfect gift for that friend of yours that’s always late.

Anti-Theft: Hidden Wall Socket Safe

Safe boxes tend to be on the pricey side, so here’s a cheap alternative for storing little pieces of jewelry and money. It only costs $7.99. Nifty little idea.

Need A Chair? Here’s Three.

KX – Extendible Chair by Baita Design.

Quite an interesting concept but it probably won’t be the most aesthetically pleasing chair around if only one or two are in use, I’d say it only looks good when it is fully extended, but still, an interesting concept nonthelesss

Spaces For Ideas: The Expandable Sketchbook

Designed by Brian Ling of Design Sojourn.

The Spaces for Ideas Expandable Sketchbook is perfect for cataloging and documenting your “big” ideas. The Sketchbook comes in a very portable A6 size (14.8cm high and 12.5cm wide including the spine) and each of its 5 pages expands into a generous A3 size. The design of the sketchbook is kept intentionally minimal and clean, so that you can assign each sketchbook to a single project or activity.

The Beginning of the Idea (Brian’s Sketches):

As stated in the other day’s post: This is the sketchbook that I’ve been waiting for. The idea is just brilliant. This is the kind of thing where people turn around and ask, “Why didn’t I think of that?” So simple yet so good. Normally, it’s $13 per book with $6 shipping. Just two days ago,  Brian ran a one day online sale in which he set a buy one get one free offer! Unfortunately I could not resist with my penchant for collecting sketchbooks. In the end it only cost me $19 altogether postage and handling for two books instead of one! Legen… wait for it, DARY. No idea how usable and functional the book is due to the folding of the paper, but I still can’t wait to start sketching in it, it should arrive in a couple of weeks.

From Paper To Presentation

Just a quick example of how all designs begin on paper, progressing through different mediums of presentations before a final outcome/ product is achieved. A table design I sketched up last year and modeled in 3D this year.

On the note of sketching, it never ceases to amaze me how Frank Gehry goes from this:

To this:

Some where, somehow, that little scribble makes sense to him. In the end, that’s all that really matters right? No one really cares how you got there… they only remember that you got there in the end.

Things I’ve Learned In My Life So Far

Inspired by the title of the book ‘Things I’ve Learned In My Life So Far‘ by Stefan Sagmeister, I am about to start a series of blog entries on things I’ve learnt and am still learning in and outside design.

The series shall start in roughly 2-3 weeks time, 2 more projects and an exam, then I’m free =]

Life on Pluto

Well not really. It’s not that cold anymore. Ive been so busy I have not had any time to update my blog at all. Anyways, just a fairly quick update, to tell you that I’m busy, but im sure you gathered that already.

Hope everyone is going well,  semester 1 was fairly good, semester 2 is even better and much more exciting, albeit stressful =[ This semester I’m doing 4 subjects again. In order of how much im enjoying it:

1. Product Drawing Class

2. Design Studio

3. Materials and Manufacturing

4. Modelmaking Workshop

Model making is just so annoying right now, perfection is an ideal, not a possibility when making models. Seriously hard. Gotta keep pushing myself to strive for the best. Will never be perfect, but I’ll get as close as possible.

Anyways! Just a few pictures of Semester 1 projects for you all to check out =]

DIGITAL ALCHEMY.'TREE OF LIFE'

I’ll probably blog about the Tree of Life one someday, there was a story to it’s inspiration! Anyways,  so much for short update, this has taken way too much time.
