Made in NYC, the wrist candy repurposes old watch pieces, making each one both unique and a chic example of upcycling.

But the best part of this accessory, its “timeless” empty face, not only neatly dismisses the modern anxieties of analogue-vs.-digital and how to convey the appropriate importance without looking too flashy, but in the process also cleverly comments on the whole convention of keeping time at all.

This watch reminded me of a conversation I had with my cousin not too long ago. He told me he didnt need watches because he always used his phone as a clock instead. This watch practically plays on that concept. Watches these days seem to be more of a fashion accessory as opposed to a means of keeping time.

I liked the concept so much, I ‘re-purposed’ an old leather strapped watch from an OP shop and made my own Timesless watch.

AFFORDANCE:

In Design, the simplified version of the term refers to the product’s aesthetic affecting the way the user perceives its use.

So last year I was sitting at a restaurant with the family admiring a fairly cool water jug design. It holds a fair amount of water, has a nice shape, overall quite a pleasing design.

Well that was until I walked past one of these a couple of days ago:

Pictured above is a chewing gum disposal unit. Pull one of these off a bin, place it on a restaurant table with water in it and I wouldn’t have known the difference.

Sometimes, when designing a product, I think it best to take a massive step back, pull yourself out of the equation and just honestly ask yourself: “What does this look like?”

Better yet, ask someone non-design related, their answer just might surprise you.

KX - Extendible Chair by Baita Design.

Quite an interesting concept but it probably won’t be the most aesthetically pleasing chair around if only one or two are in use, I’d say it only looks good when it is fully extended, but still, an interesting concept nonthelesss

The Spaces for Ideas Expandable Sketchbook is perfect for cataloging and documenting your “big” ideas. The Sketchbook comes in a very portable A6 size (14.8cm high and 12.5cm wide including the spine) and each of its 5 pages expands into a generous A3 size. As stated in the other day’s post: This is the sketchbook that I’ve been waiting for. The idea is just brilliant. This is the kind of thing where people turn around and ask, “Why didn’t I think of that?” So simple yet so good. Normally, it’s $13 per book with $6 shipping. Just two days ago,  Brian ran a one day online sale in which he set a buy one get one free offer! Unfortunately I could not resist with my penchant for collecting sketchbooks. In the end it only cost me $19 altogether postage and handling for two books instead of one! Legen… wait for it, DARY. No idea how usable and functional the book is due to the folding of the paper, but I still can’t wait to start sketching in it, it should arrive in a couple of weeks.

I just love sketchbooks, collecting them, sketching in them, owning them, the list goes on. I’ve got at least 3 sketchbooks with 2 more on it’s way.

My little Think Pad sketch book that I carry with me almost everywhere. Every little bit of inspiration that strikes me is scribbled down immediately. At other times it is also used for casual/ leisurely sketching.

Moleskine Sketchbook, given to me on my Birthday but I haven’t finished my little Think Pad, so I have restricted myself from opening it. It’s still brand new in it’s packaging!

Finally! This brings me to the other sketchbooks I’ve been waiting for. I’ve had my eyes on this brilliant little sketchbooks for awhile but chose not to buy it due to having a Moleskine waiting for me once my little pad ran out. Actually… I’ll save that for another post, it seriously deserves it’s own post. Part 2 tomorrow perhaps.
